Why You Need A Website

Having chosen a niche, you need to sell something to the people in that niche if you want to make money on the internet.

You don’t have to have your own website to do this. You can create your webpages for free on existing websites such as Facebook.com, Blogger.com, etc. But they aren’t very flexible. You aren’t building your own site so you aren’t in control of your business. Your business is dependent on those who own the website. There will be restrictions on what you can do, they can remove your pages if they want and you may have to compete with other people’s adverts appearing on your pages.

Also, a website is “internet real estate”. It can acquire value. Many people make money by building websites and then selling them for massive profits. If you don’t own your own website, you can’t sell it.

Now, you could just stick a sales letter on a single webpage promoting an affiliate product or your own product and hope people will buy. But this isn’t likely to work very well …

People love to buy what they want but they hate to be sold to. Have you ever walked in to a store wanting to buy something but are put off when an over-eager sales assistant pounces on you and asks if they can “help you” (and by “help you” they really mean “sell to you”)? This approach tends to make people defensive and their natural reaction is to say, “No thanks. I’m just browsing.”

But if someone that you know, like and trust, who’s opinion you value, came up to you in the store and said “If I were you, I’d buy this.” Then you are highly likely to follow their advice.

It’s the same on the internet. If someone arrives at your website and all they see is a glaring sales message that shouts from the page “BUY THIS! BUY THIS! BUY THIS!” their natural reaction will be to click away from your website.

Research has shown that, on average, it takes 7 contacts to make a sale. But once they’ve clicked away from your website, they probably won’t come back. So your chances of making a sale have gone forever.

So instead of trying to sell something to first-time visitors to your website, you want to build and nurture a relationship with them. You want them to perceive you as an authority or expert. You want them to get to know, like and trust you. Then they will WANT to buy from you rather than you having to try to sell to them.

So instead of a one page website that just displays a sales letter, you need to build e a website full of content about what it is that your target niche wants, for several reasons …

  • Search engines like Google want to give their users what they are looking for. Most people who use search engines are searching the internet for information. So search engines rank content websites, which are full of useful information, much higher in their search results than sales pages (which may not rank in the search results at all). So a content site can attract FREE traffic from the search engines whereas a sales page probably won’t.
  • When people visit your content website that is full of the useful information they are looking for, they will perceive you as an authority or expert in your niche. This builds your credibility in their eyes so they are more likely to buy from you.
  • You can use your content site to encourage people to opt-in to your auto-responder email list so you can build and nurture your relationship with them making it even easier to sell to them later, perhaps over and over again.
  • It’s hard to write long sales copy that can convert first time visitors in to buyers. But it’s easy to write short sales copy that encourages people to give you their email address in return for free information that they are looking for and then let your auto-responder email sequence build and nurture the relationship and subtly do your selling for you over time.
When designing and building your website and adding content to it over time, focus on just one thing: giving people in your chosen niche exactly what they are looking for. Concentrate on just providing solutions to their problems.
